~Day 7 of Challenge~

Day 07 - A picture of your most treasured item.

Although I generally don't think we should lay up our treasures here on earth, I do cherish my wedding rings. The stories of where my husband and I came from would seem, to even me, one of those things that you see in a movie and think, 'hmph, that would never really happen, it's just too over the top' -- but nevertheless, it is what it is...and God still managed to turn so much bad into so much good.

HORACE & BONNIE

When my husband, Doug, was 4, he had two brothers, ages 9 and 11, named Jeffrey and Kenneth.

JEFFREY

KENNETH

Their mom and dad, Bonnie and Horace, were said to be incredibly in love. Bonnie was a person that would catch a bug in her house and release it outside rather than kill it...and Horace was the guy that everyone seemed to know and love. That same year, Bonnie died from cancer, and Horace was left with three boys to raise by himself until he met Peggy, and they married and had a little girl together, named Kathleen.

PEGGY

KATHLEEN

Sadly, when my husband was 6, Peggy was taking the boys to school and had Kathleen with them when there was a horrible car accident that killed everyone but my husband. Soon after that, his dad, Horace, had a massive heart attack and died.

See...? I told you it was so out there that it seems unbelievable. When Doug and I were first getting into a serious relationship, I actually had a moment where I questioned the truth of such an outrageously sad story.

So at 6, my husband was orphaned, not only losing his parents, but all of his siblings. But God was watching over him still, and his dad's brother and wife, who had a son and a daughter, took him home and called him their own. His "mom" (his Aunt Gail) put away his mom's wedding rings so that one day he would be able to give them to the woman he'd marry if he chose to, and he did, and those are the rings I wear to this day. I've actually had people ask me if I don't wonder about the rings being bad luck or something silly, but I don't look at them as cursed, but instead as blessed. They were given and worn in the presence of great love back then, and now still. I just hope that his mom, up in heaven, is happy with who Doug chose to give her rings to. ♥

What a love story. Sad that it is but the love is there you hear it in your tytped words and see it in the photos. You are so blessed to have such cherished love in those rings. That now is yours. Thank you for sharing this love story.
Blessings

My husbands "mom & dad" (Aunt Gail and Uncle John) never treated him differently and raised him to be the greatest guy I've ever met, seriously.
I kid (but I mean it) that for the first 4 or 5 years of our relationship I kept waiting for Doug to show me his true colors and "turn mean" on me...he would laugh and say, "This is me, babydoll...I'm not changing." I could not believe a man existed that treated a woman (especially insignificant me) so consistently sweet, kind, and loving...yet here he was, and he is my husband...still amazing to me!
I was going to go into a little more detail...but hesitated as it's such a gut-wrenching story...but Doug's dad actually had his first heart attack a couple of weeks after the accident that killed everyone, and he survived, but his prognosis was not good...so he asked his brother to please care for Doug, and then he wrote a card to Doug -- I would only share what was written inside with my husbands blessing of course... anyway, he died shortly after from the 2nd heart attack. He was 47.

Between your life and Doug's life it would make an amazing love story...when my 5 boys and 1 daughter become famous film producers (all of them are learning different areas of film production so they can get together and create a family film company), I'm going to make sure they make a movie of you two!

What a sad but also sweet story. I am so glad that Doug had such good people to take care of him. Bless them for that.
Tom's wedding ring is my dad's.

Wow... my heart is just so full of compassion for a 6 year old little boy. I have children ages 4, 6, 8, and 12. I just can't imagine one of them having to go through that. I'm glad he had good people to take care of him.
That really puts life in perspective.

I see what you are saying about that story. How absolutely tragic for your husband and an honour to wear his mom's wedding rings. What a lovely thing for his 'mom' to do.

Happy SITS day.

I was feeling sorry for myself over something trivial, until I read this posting. Thank you for sharing this.

That story is incredible and your comment here only made it more so. My heart aches for the little boy your husband was but maybe he is the man he is today because of all he went through then. And maybe it was God's plan all along. I think his mom would be very happy with the person he chose to give her rings to.

Cheers :-)
